The Relieving Chambers Mystery
Above the King's Chamber lie five "relieving chambers" — stacked horizontal granite slabs separated by spaces. Conventional theory says they redistribute the weight of the pyramid above. However, the Queen's Chamber (lower and bearing more weight) has no relieving chambers and has survived equally well. The uppermost relieving chamber has a gabled (pointed) granite roof. The spaces between the chambers show no signs of bearing structural load. Quarry marks with Khufu's cartouche appear in these spaces — the only place Khufu's name appears in the pyramid. Some researchers speculate the relieving chambers serve an acoustic or electromagnetic function rather than structural.
