The Four Star Shafts: Precise Astronomical Alignments c. 2500 BCE

THE FOUR SHAFTS

The Great Pyramid contains four narrow shafts (roughly 20x20cm cross-section) that extend from the King's Chamber and Queen's Chamber outward through the body of the pyramid at precise angles. These are conventionally called "air shafts," though they do not provide ventilation (the Queen's Chamber shafts were originally sealed at both ends).

MEASURED ANGLES AND STELLAR TARGETS (c. 2500 BCE)

Using precession calculations to determine the sky as it appeared circa 2500 BCE, researchers (notably Robert Bauval and Adrian Gilbert, 1994) determined the following alignments:

1. KING'S CHAMBER — SOUTHERN SHAFT (angle: ~45 degrees)

Target: Al Nitak (Zeta Orionis) — the lowest star in Orion's Belt
Significance: Orion was associated with Osiris, the god of the dead and resurrection
The shaft points to Al Nitak's meridian transit altitude at epoch ~2500 BCE

2. KING'S CHAMBER — NORTHERN SHAFT (angle: ~32.5 degrees)

Target: Thuban (Alpha Draconis) — the Pole Star circa 2787 BCE
Significance: Thuban was the celestial pole star during the construction era
The "imperishable star" that never sets — symbol of immortality

3. QUEEN'S CHAMBER — SOUTHERN SHAFT (angle: ~39.5 degrees)

Target: Sirius (Alpha Canis Majoris)
Significance: Sirius was associated with Isis, consort of Osiris
Its heliacal rising marked the Egyptian New Year and the Nile flood
Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky

4. QUEEN'S CHAMBER — NORTHERN SHAFT (angle: ~39 degrees)

Target: Kochab (Beta Ursae Minoris)
Significance: Part of the constellation "The Thigh" (our Ursa Minor)
Associated with the cosmic axis and celestial permanence

PRECISION OF ALIGNMENT

The shafts are aligned to their respective stars within approximately 1 degree of arc. Given that the shafts are narrow channels cut through 60+ meters of solid masonry, this precision is remarkable. The angular accuracy implies the builders could measure stellar positions to better than 1 degree — consistent with their demonstrated ability to align the base to true north within 3/60 of a degree.

THE SEALED SHAFTS MYSTERY

The Queen's Chamber shafts were originally sealed at the chamber end by a ~13cm limestone block (discovered by Waynman Dixon in 1872). In 1993, Rudolf Gantenbrink's robot "Upuaut 2" crawled up the southern shaft and found it blocked by a small limestone "door" with copper fittings approximately 60meters up. In 2002, National Geographic's robot drilled through this door and found another blocking stone behind it. In 2011, a flexible camera found red ochre markings on the floor behind the second door.

These sealed shafts were never meant for air circulation. Their purpose was either symbolic (pathways for the soul) or functional (conduits for something else entirely). The copper fittings on the "doors" suggest a functional purpose — copper is used for its conductive properties, not its symbolic value.

THE ORION CORRELATION

Robert Bauval's "Orion Correlation Theory" (1989) noted that the three Giza pyramids mirror the three belt stars of Orion. The relative sizes and positions of the pyramids correspond to the relative brightness and angular positions of Al Nitak, Al Nilam, and Mintaka. The "Nile" in this mapping corresponds to the Milky Way. If correct, the entire Giza plateau is a ground-level map of the Orion constellation, with the Great Pyramid aligned to the belt star via its interior shaft.

WHAT THE SHAFTS TELL US

The shaft alignments demonstrate:

  1. Advanced astronomical knowledge (stellar positions, precession effects)
  2. The ability to plan sight-lines through 60+ meters of solid stone BEFORE construction
  3. A deliberate connection between the pyramid's interior and specific celestial objects
  4. Knowledge of which star was the pole star 4,500 years ago (confirmed by precession)
  5. A possible system of "targeting" — pointing from the interior to astronomical objects
