The Giza Power Plant: Christopher Dunn's Hydrogen Maser Hypothesis
THE THEORY
Christopher Dunn, a British-American master craftsman and precision engineer with decades of experience in aerospace manufacturing, proposed in his 1998 book "The Giza Power Plant" that the Great Pyramid functioned as an acoustically-coupled maser (Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) powered by hydrogen gas.
THE PROPOSED MECHANISM
Step 1 — ENERGY INPUT:
Earth's seismic vibrations (constant microseisms at ~7Hz) enter through the bedrock. The Subterranean Chamber acts as a Helmholtz resonator, amplifying these vibrations.
Step 2 — ACOUSTIC AMPLIFICATION:
Vibrations propagate up through the pyramid's core. The Grand Gallery acts as a resonance hall, with its 28 paired slots holding Helmholtz resonators tuned to specific harmonics. The acoustic energy is focused and amplified as it rises.
Step 3 — CHEMICAL FUEL:
Dilute hydrochloric acid (via the north shaft) and zinc chloride solution (via the south shaft) are delivered to the Queen's Chamber. They react to produce hydrogen gas:
The hydrogen rises through the passage into the King's Chamber.
Step 4 — PIEZOELECTRIC EXCITATION:
The granite King's Chamber walls, under enormous compressive stress and vibrating from the acoustic input, generate oscillating electromagnetic fields via the piezoelectric effect. The chamber fills with hydrogen gas and oscillating EM energy.
Step 5 — MASER ACTION:
The hydrogen atoms absorb acoustic and electromagnetic energy, achieving population inversion (more atoms in excited states than ground states). When stimulated, they emit coherent microwave radiation at the hydrogen line frequency (1420MHz). The granite coffer may have served as the resonant cavity for this maser.
Step 6 — OUTPUT:
The coherent microwave energy exits through the northern shaft of the King's Chamber (pointed at the celestial pole), which acts as a waveguide. If the missing capstone was made of gold or electrum, it would serve as the antenna.
SUPPORTING EVIDENCE
- Chemical residue in Queen's Chamber shafts matches the required reagents
- The King's Chamber granite is piezoelectric (high quartz content)
- The chamber acoustics are precision-tuned
- The five relieving chambers could act as electromagnetic waveguides
- The Grand Gallery's 28 slots match the structure of a resonance array
- The Subterranean Chamber has Helmholtz resonator geometry
- The missing capstone could have been a conductive antenna
- 1420MHz (the hydrogen line) is the universal "waterhole" frequency used by SETI
CRITICISM
- No surviving mechanical components have been found
- The chemical analysis has not been independently replicated with modern methods
- No other structure in Egypt appears designed for this purpose
- The maser concept requires specific conditions that are difficult to verify
- Mainstream Egyptology dismisses the theory as pseudoscience
ASSESSMENT
Dunn's hypothesis is the most technically detailed alternative theory. As a precision engineer, he brings manufacturing expertise that pure archaeologists lack. His observation that the pyramid's internal features are inconsistent with a tomb but consistent with a machine has never been adequately refuted — only dismissed.
