The Unmapped Underground: What GPR and Seismic Surveys Reveal Beneath Giza

WHAT LIES BENEATH THE GIZA PLATEAU — AND WHY WE DON'T KNOW

Multiple ground-penetrating radar (GPR), seismic tomography, and electrical resistivity surveys have been conducted beneath the Giza Plateau. Each has revealed anomalies suggesting constructed features that remain unexcavated.

KEY SURVEYS AND FINDINGS:

1. DOBECKI & SCHOCH (1991):

Ground-penetrating radar beneath the Sphinx revealed a rectangular anomaly approximately 12m x 15m at a depth of ~5meters beneath the front paws. The anomaly's rectangular shape is inconsistent with natural geological formations.
This is consistent with the "Hall of Records" tradition.

2. SRI INTERNATIONAL (1977-1978):

Electromagnetic sounding surveys detected several anomalies beneath the Sphinx and between the Sphinx and the pyramids, including linear features suggesting tunnels or constructed passages.

3. WASEDA UNIVERSITY (1987):

Japanese team using electromagnetic radar and microgravity surveys found:
  • A tunnel-like feature running south beneath the Sphinx enclosure
  • A water pocket beneath the Sphinx's south side
  • Anomalies in the bedrock near the Queen's Chamber entrance

4. SCANPYRAMIDS (2015-2017):

Infrared thermography revealed unexpected thermal anomalies on the eastern face of the Great Pyramid at ground level — suggesting voids, air circulation, or different materials behind the surface. Muon tomography confirmed the Big Void.

5. NATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF ASTRONOMY AND GEOPHYSICS (EGYPT, 2000s):

Surveys beneath the plateau have detected what appear to be cavities, water-filled chambers, and constructed passages at various depths. Many have never been excavated.

THE ACCESS PROBLEM:

Despite multiple surveys detecting anomalies, the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities has not permitted excavation of most detected features. Reasons given include:

  • Preservation concerns (legitimate for surface structures)
  • Structural stability of the plateau (legitimate for deep excavation)
  • "No significant finds expected" (contradicted by the survey data)

THE IMPLICATION:

We know there are constructed features beneath the Giza Plateau that have never been explored. We know the Osiris Shaft reaches the water table 30meters below and has tunnels extending toward the Great Pyramid. We know there are rectangular anomalies beneath the Sphinx. We know there are thermal anomalies on the Great Pyramid's base.

The underground infrastructure of Giza is largely UNMAPPED. What we see above ground — the pyramids, the Sphinx, the temples — may be only the visible portion of a much larger integrated complex that extends deep into the bedrock and aquifer system.
