The Big Void: A 30-Meter Cavity Hidden Inside the Great Pyramid

THE BIGGEST DISCOVERY INSIDE THE PYRAMID IN 4,500 YEARS

In November 2017, the ScanPyramids project (a collaboration between Cairo University, Heritage Innovation Preservation institute, and international physics teams) announced the detection of a previously unknown void inside the Great Pyramid.

THE DETECTION METHOD: MUON TOMOGRAPHY

Cosmic ray muons — high-energy particles that rain down from the atmosphere — pass through stone but are partially absorbed. By placing muon detectors inside the pyramid and measuring the muon flux from different directions, researchers can create a density map of the structure. Less dense areas (voids) show higher muon counts.

Three independent muon detection techniques confirmed the discovery:

  1. Nuclear emulsion films (Nagoya University)
  2. Scintillator hodoscopes (KEK, Japan)
  3. Gas detectors (CEA, France)

All three methods independently confirmed a void with the following characteristics:

  • Length: at least 30meters (similar to the Grand Gallery)
  • Location: directly above the Grand Gallery
  • Cross-section: uncertain, but significant (not a small crack)
  • Orientation: roughly parallel to the Grand Gallery

WHAT COULD IT BE?

  1. A STRUCTURAL RELIEVING CHAMBER: Like the five relieving chambers above the King's Chamber, this void might exist to reduce the weight of stone above the Grand Gallery. But the Grand Gallery's corbelled design already distributes weight efficiently.
  2. A CONSTRUCTION GAP: Internal ramp theories (Jean-Pierre Houdin) suggest an internal spiral ramp was used during construction. The void might be an abandoned section of this ramp. But 30meters is very long for a ramp section.
  3. A FUNCTIONAL CHAMBER: In the transmitter model, a 30-meter void directly above the Grand Gallery could serve as a RESONANCE CHAMBER — a second acoustic space that couples with the Grand Gallery below. Two coupled resonant cavities produce richer harmonic content and wider frequency response than a single cavity. In acoustic engineering, this is called a "coupled room" system.
  4. A HIDDEN CHAMBER: Could contain artifacts, records, or technology. No method exists to access or image the void without invasive drilling, which Egyptian authorities have not permitted.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR THE TRANSMITTER MODEL:

The Grand Gallery is the acoustic processing stage of the transmitter. If the Big Void is a parallel resonance chamber, it would:

  • Double the effective acoustic volume
  • Create coupled resonances with the Grand Gallery
  • Allow frequency selection through constructive/destructive interference
  • Potentially house equipment or mechanisms not visible from the known passages

The void was discovered by muon tomography — the same physics (cosmic ray interactions) that the pyramid may have been designed to interact with. The irony is extraordinary.
