Ziggurats of Sumer

Ur, Iraq (30.9627°N, 46.1031°E)

Detailed Account

The great stepped temples of Mesopotamia, including the Ziggurat of Ur (21m tall). Like Egyptian pyramids, these are precisely oriented to cardinal directions and incorporated astronomical alignments. Sumerian texts describe the ziggurats as 'bonds between heaven and earth' — language remarkably similar to Egyptian pyramid texts. The Sumerians credited their knowledge to the Anunnaki — 'those who from heaven came.'
