Full Description

Royal College of Art study (2013-2014): 5-20% of rocks at Carn Menyn Ridge, Preseli Hills produce metallic sounds "like bells, gongs, and tin drums" when struck. Bluestones at Stonehenge itself still ring after millennia of erosion. The stones contain secondary quartz from metamorphism, giving them both acoustic resonance and piezoelectric properties. This solves the longstanding mystery of why Neolithic builders transported 80+ stones 260km when local sarsen was available: they selected stones for their SOUND properties. The monument functioned as a "prehistoric glockenspiel" for ritual acoustic performance.
